Local school boards are vital to a community because they are the governing body of a school district. They are the link between the school system and the public. Local School Boards set district goals, oversee personnel, manage all financial assets, and have oversight of approved curriculum. They provide a forum for public input into the educational process and are the ones who support community standards and, as such, are held accountable for their decisions. The quality of a local school district can significantly impact the value of homes in the area, which in turn affects local taxes and the community’s economic health. Strong, high-quality public schools are a major draw for families and businesses. This can decrease crime rates and contribute to better educational, social, and health outcomes for the community as a whole. Voting for the wrong people to serve on a school board can be detrimental to an entire community. The importance of knowing the candidates and voting for qualified members depends on the voters in the community. Each voter is responsible for the school board they acquire.

In Ohio and West Virginia, all school board positions are non-partisan. They are elected not to further any party agenda, but to serve as individual members dedicated to public education, ensuring a strong education for our future citizens. The National School Board Association lists professional and personal qualities important in selecting those who serve on School Boards.

A desire to be a team player to further a unified mission.

A knowledge of public education and fiscal responsibility.

A strong commitment to public education and student achievement.

Knowledge of state and federal laws governing public education.

A desire to represent all segments of the community.

Personal Qualities that a School Board Member Should Exhibit:

Being disciplined, transparent, unbiased, and professional.

Demonstrating integrity and commitment to public education.

On Sept. 25, 2025, all Washington County school board candidates for all six county districts have been invited by Living Democracy and Washington County Democratic Women to a public forum at Marietta High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. This is free and open to the public for questions. Check the Washington County, Ohio, Board of Elections website for official election information, go to websites that fairly compare all candidates, and know how your candidates who have served on school boards have voted in the past. Voting is a civic duty that gives citizens power and holds elected officials accountable to the people they serve. Vote.
