Baby Boxes save lives
We don’t hear about them often — because the decision to give up a child is an excruciating one, and does not often result in their use — but another Safe Haven Baby Box HAS been used to legally surrender a baby in Ohio.
This one was at the Delhi Township Fire Department, where firefighters responded in less than a minute to deliver care to the infant, according to the Safe Haven organization.
Founder Monica Kelsey took to social media to make the announcement, saying “We’ve had another baby surrendered legally in one of our Safe Haven Baby Boxes. This time down in the Cincinnati area in Ohio.”
According to a report on the post by People, Kelsey told the parent “Your baby was taken from this box in under a minute,” and “From the bottom of my heart, thank you for trusting us and trusting the fire department to take it from here. Your baby was loved by the firefighters who took this baby from the box, and they handled this with ease.”
Safe Haven isn’t just about Baby Boxes, the group also works to raise awareness and prevent illegal abandonment of newborns, and provides a hotline to counsel mothers in crisis. The group says the Baby Boxes are a last resort.
But when they are necessary, how wonderful to know such an option exists in Ohio, as the alternative for a parent who has reached that breaking point is unthinkable.
Firefighters who swiftly took care of the infant are to be commended for their quick and compassionate action. The department’s decision to have the box installed has paid off by saving a life. More than 300 other locations across the country also have installed a Baby Box.
“We never know when a surrender will be necessary,” Kelsey has said. “What is important is that we are prepared should one need to occur.”
Again, thank goodness for those at the Delhi Township Fire Department who were able to rise to this occasion. Perhaps their story will inspire other locations to consider whether they will be able to do the same for a parent in crisis much closer to home.
