A response team made of teachers, coaches, administrators and support staff at Fort Frye Local Schools is trained and ready to take potentially life-saving action should a sudden cardiac arrest occur. Public officials well aware of Ohio’s problems with a shortage of accessible, affordable housing might not be aware of a growing problem related to that challenge. Nursing homes are sending patients to homeless shelters at a growing rate. A Signal Ohio report earlier this month looked at nursing homes transferring “older, poorer and medically fragile” patients to homeless shelters. What began as an effort to honor two local girls who faced childhood cancer by raising money to support local families and research has turned into a community-wide drive that has donated more than $735,000 over the years. Lawmakers just can’t help themselves when presented with an opportunity to exert more control over local decisions. Among more recent examples is a provision in Ohio Senate Bill 311, which “Regards the operation of public and chartered nonpublic schools.” There is a lot in the bill — some good, some lawmakers seem to have been hoping no one would notice.
