A Great Race Thank You!

The news that Marietta was chosen as the best overnight stop during this year’s Great Race makes me proud, but not surprised. The first Year Team Pioneer competed in the Great Race was 2012, that year the race went around the Great Lakes. It was a wonderful experience. Other years were different routes such as: Route 66 from Missouri to California and The Lincoln Highway from The Golden Gate Bridge to Iowa. Perhaps you remember the daily updates that aired on WMOA. Sometimes a person can be overwhelmed by the negative news and events on the local and national scene. I wanted to take to take a moment to publicly thank a local business for their generosity. I work for the Driver Rehabilitation Program at Marietta Memorial Hospital as a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Program. We serve individuals in our region whose ability to drive is complicated by a congenital or acquired disability. Who is in the wrong?

I was shocked, but also saddened to read the Letter to the Editor in Monday’s paper from a fellow retired educator. He complained that the statistics of the segregated Negro Leagues were blended in with those of Major League Baseball when it was all white. He claims that this was an attempt to “erase the past and cancel what was done.” We cannot erase the horrible stain of slavery nor of segregation, but when possible, we can do what we can to correct it and educate people about our past. Scrutinize Project 2025

For the past few days, I have listened to the speakers at the Republican National Convention. They claim they want to unify our country. While this sounds good, my concern with this proposal is what does it mean to “unite” a country? Does Unity mean to control individuals to the point where there is no diversity of ideas, value or lifestyles. Choices in such as “united” country would resemble other authoritarian dictatorships such as Communist China, Russia or North Korea. In the fall of 2019 the First Congregational United Church of Christ at 318 Front St. was in the midst of serving a weekly Free Breakfast. What began as a simple invitation to the nearby neighborhood in downtown Marietta had evolved, with the COVID 19 Pandemic , to a “drive-thru distribution to 140 people each week. Volunteers served not only residents but an increasing number of people who were without homes. Lie dressed in religious garb still a lie

Have we now come to the point where newspapers are printing letters to God rather than letters to the editor? Are we at the point where outrageous conspiracy theories are printed on the editorial pages of our newspapers instead of well-reasoned opinions? Are we at the point where “Almost Heaven, WV” suffices to identify the municipality of a contributor to the paper? These questions are prompted by the printing of a piece in the July 9, 2024, Marietta Times. The author identifies herself as a storyteller, and she certainly is.
