Taking care of business

The most important business before President Biden and Congress is raising the debt ceiling. It was raised three times during the Trump administration with bipartisan support. The Republicans need to act responsibly — not push their own agenda instead of taking care of the nation’s business. Mr. Trump gave a big tax cut to the wealthy but then the Republicans whine when President Biden tries to help you and I and passes an infrastructure bill (with Republican help) that is finally going to rebuild our roads, bridges and airports that have been neglected for years. Mitch seemed ...

Listen to Matamoras residents

Well isn’t this a fine kettle of fish? Memorial Health System has decided in their corporate “wisdom” that they will discontinue service to New Matamoras’ satellite clinic and the clients there can just put up with it and travel downriver to St. Marys or go without health care! This town has had a doctor’s office since the mid-1800s serving the area and the needs of our residents. For the MHS to unexpectedly pull up roots and leave is unconscionable. This office has at least 800 clients who depend on it for their basic needs ... and we don’t want to travel to St. Marys for ...

Tsars and Tsarinas

We are “tossing” around words like “Tsars” and “Tsarinas” without paying any attention to the meanings of the words (titles). Clueless government officials who are elected by us the people cannot appoint tsars and tsarinas. Tsars and Tsarinas are born into their lifestyle. They can be compared to Kings and Queens. They retain their reign for a lifetime. The best example is late Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. She was admired for her grace by this world as we know it. She ascended into her position in 1952 at the age of 25 and reigned until her death in 2022. There ...

Wonderful live music was performed by Marietta’s own High Schools That Rock with Mark Doebrich, band director, The Drum Circle from the Unitarian Universalist Society and Chase Brady. The Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia (ACCA), ...

Speak up against AEP rate increase

American Electric Power (AEP) is raising its electricity rates in Ohio on June 1 by 28%. On top of that huge increase, AEP Ohio is proposing an additional 5% rate hike to take effect in 2024 with a continued annual increase until 2030. AEP Ohio is asking the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) to approve these increases. Representatives from PUCO came to Marietta on May 1 for a public hearing on this proposed rate increase. I attended this hearing, which was held at Washington State CC, and was one of only two people to give testimony—both of us spoke in opposition to this rate ...
