Activist’s death justifies opposition

Manuel Esteban Paez Ter’n, 26, a Venezuelan environmental activist known as “Tortuguita” or “Little Turtle,” was murdered by Georgia police Jan. 18, 2023. Tortuguita was participating in a movement known as Stop Cop City, which aims to prevent the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. Opponents of this facility have decried the increasing militarization of law enforcement, as well as escalating rates of wanton police violence. Hating the sin and not the sinner

Have you noticed how the word “hate” is thrown out all across this country every day? The “hate” word criers are screaming loudly that extra punishments need put on the accused “haters” that they identify. They purposely ignore their own “hating habits and usage.” I write this in reference to the local “hate monger,” who said the Center For Christian Virtue is a “hate” group. They are so labeled because of the stance against homosexual, and the current rage of he/she and she/he immoralities. Christians are instructed to hate sin, but not the sinners. ...

What a great community we live in. The 40th annual Eve Benefit Auction on Aug. 26 was a tremendous success — we grossed over $38,000 all because of the wonderful support we received from the community, local businesses and the many individuals who attended, bid for items and had fun at the event. Local auctioneers, Charlie and Keelan McLeish, volunteered their time and once again had the crowd energized. Mid-Ohio Valley climate corner: How much are you willing to tolerate?

On Sept. 8 a brine truck carrying what was reported as drilling brine with zinc salts crashed on or near Mountaineer Hwy. near New Martinsville spilling 1260 gallons into a yard and a creek that leads to Little Fishing Creek which, of course, leads to the Ohio River. The truck could easily have been en route to injection wells in Ohio as seems to be customary. Given the number of miles these brine trucks seem to travel in our part of the world it seems inevitable that these types of incidents are going to happen periodically.
