Add to Ohio supports for Gold Star families

State Rep. Kevin Ritter, R-Marietta, has introduced a bill in Ohio that is reportedly also gaining interest in West Virginia. The proposal would allow Gold Star family members to get special driver’s licenses that would identify them quickly when they are claiming benefits, rather than forcing them to present a death certificate. “I met a couple of different Gold Star Families over the last six months and in speaking with them the one thing that stuck with me was to claim any benefits their son or daughter earned before being killed in the military, they have to actually have to ...

Cracking the Code: Data centers

On Monday, one candidate for West Virginia House of Delegates stood on a street corner holding up his campaign sign, typical for candidates before an election. This candidate had an assistant who held up a “No Data Center” sign. There are currently no plans for a data center in our community like in other places in the Shale Crescent USA region. If a data center was planned for Elkview, I would be concerned. I know data centers are essential to our everyday lives and national security. “No data centers” anywhere is irresponsible and dangerous. This candidate was defeated. Ways ...

Hunting and fishing in early Marietta

Marietta’s first settlers had to find their own food. No supermarkets or convenience stores then. Some foodstuffs could be brought in from the east but not enough to survive on. Fortunately, the new territory was a hunting and fishing paradise. Colonel Joseph Barker’s journals provide ...

Ohio full of summer vacation options

State officials celebrated Tourism Day at the Ohio Statehouse earlier this week. As they did so, they highlighted many of the destinations and experiences that make the Buckeye State the heart of it all. Surely, there are Ohio destinations that are known all over the country — maybe even around the world — such as the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland or Cedar Point in Sandusky. But our lesser known gems are what really makes Ohio worth the trip. “Summer in Ohio means county fairs, lake trips, family road trips, baseball games, ...

Most favored nation drug pricing model puts people with disabilities at risk

For thousands of Ohio families, Easterseals of Central and Southeast Ohio provides programs that deliver equality, dignity, and independence to people with disabilities. For us, success is achieving a world where every child, adult, and older person is 100% included and 100% empowered. The Ohioans we serve depend not only on support services from Easterseals but also on access to innovative medical treatments and therapies that help them live the healthiest lives possible. I have deep concerns with the growing push for a federal Most Favored Nation (MFN) prescription drug pricing ...
