BELPRE — Gracie Bills double-doubled with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds here Tuesday night for Belpre, but the Golden Eagles suffered a seventh straight setback as the hosts had no answer for Williamstown’s Quinn Bunch, who drained seven triples and pumped in a career-high 28 points as the No. 3 Class AA Yellowjackets escaped Joe Garrett Court with a 47-37 victory.
Belpre, which slipped to 3-12 for head man Austin Cunningham, went into halftime even at 23-all and led 27-24 early in the third before the ‘Jackets went on an 11-0 spurt to change the tide thanks to an Arissa Burt putback and then a trio of deep 3s from Bunch.
Khloe Cooper added 11 points, six rebounds and four steals while Megan Carmichael finished with eight points and seven caroms for the Golden Eagles, who play Thursday at Trimble.
“Williamstown is a really good team. You know, us just not being able to execute in the second half and they went on a little run and we just couldn’t stop the bleeding there,” admitted coach Cunningham, whose team missed 18 of 20 from beyond the arc and held a 39-29 edge on the glass while going 3 of 5 from the charity stripe compared to Williamstown’s 7 of 16 showing.
“That little three-, four-minute stretch in the second half killed us. We tried to fight back from there. We’ve been dealing with some injuries. That’s Julia’s (Way) first game back in a month and Gracie was off there for a couple weeks. We’re still trying to build up and get our conditioning up. Hopefully get prepared for February.”

Bunch’s first triple came after a Burt steal and an Anna Cosner assist which gave the visitors a 5-2 lead at 3:22 of the first. However, Cooper answered right back with a trifecta thanks to an Addy Stewart dime.
Bunch, who had 10 points at intermission, drained one more 3 in the first via a Makaela Bandy feed, but Bills converted a pair of buckets to give the hosts a 9-8 cushion after one.
Not happy with the way his starters were playing early in the second, WHS head coach Danny Bunch subbed everyone out. Trailing 14-10 at that point, WHS got a 3 from Reese Boone and then a driving lay-in by Bandy to grab a 15-14 advantage.
A three-point play by Cosner, who had a game-high four assists and tied Cooper with a game-high four steals, put the ‘Jackets ahead 18-16 midway through the second, but Way converted a layup to even it. Stewart’s 3 with 27 seconds left made it 23-21, but Bunch got a high kiss floater off the glass to fall to square it at the break.
“The wholesale change, I know my girls, and I can tell when they are giving it to me and when they are not,” said coach Bunch. “We were just trying to get a point across. I thought that group came in there and gave us some energy. They held their own defensively. I just know my girls and it was time. Coach (Beth) Reck mentioned it and I was like ‘do it. Let’s pull them all out of there.’

“Thank goodness it didn’t bite me in the butt tonight. We still didn’t shoot the ball very well until Quinn got hot in the second half. It was pretty fun to watch. We just have to keep pounding. It’s our only game this week and we really haven’t played very well our last few games. That’s good to be doing that now. Every team has their downs and we just have to go back to the gym tomorrow.”
Following the 11-0 run by Williamstown, which made it 35-27, Madi Lauer assisted on a Cooper 12-foot jumper, but the deficit was still six, 37-31, entering the fourth as Chloe Mulligan added a foul shot with 1.7 left on the clock.
Williamstown, which improved to 9-2 and plays host to Doddridge County on Monday before going to No. 2 Class A St. Marys on Tuesday and ending the week on Saturday afternoon at No. 2 double-A Wheeling Central, scored the first eight points of the fourth to push its lead to 45-33. Maggie Frye and Burt made a foul shot apiece while Bunch added her final two triples.
Belpre missed all nine of its attempts from 3 in the second half and converted just 6 of 30 from the floor after intermission en route to shooting 28.6% (16 of 56). WHS finished 16 of 38 (42.1%) and made 8 of 18 from distance.
Bills and Burt had a trio of steals apiece on a night when WHS held a 16-18 edge on turnovers.
