Hoops roundup: Fairchild fuels Waterford win
WATERFORD — Waterford’s lone 12th-grader made sure to put on a show for senior night.
Weston Fairchild put up a 23-point, 18-rebound double-double to lead the Wildcats past Athens 68-54 Saturday at the Harry Cooper Annex.
Fairchild finished 9 for 14 from the floor and 5 for 7 from the free-throw line as Waterford has won four straight games and eight of its last nine to improve to 10-9 on the year.
The Wildcats, who visit Nelsonville-York on Tuesday, set the tone early by outscoring the Bulldogs 21-6 in the opening quarter. Athens (5-13) cut it to 34-30 by halftime but Waterford won the third quarter 19-10 to create a comfortable cushion.
Reese Lang knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and four assists. Gavin Hiener added 11 points and two blocks, Finn Pennock tallied nine points and four dimes while Avery Pottmeyer chipped in seven points and a team-high five assists.
Athens got 22 points apiece from Collin Chapman and Wren Ballew.
Marietta 87, Morgan 47
MARIETTA — Coming off their first loss since Dec. 19, the Marietta Tigers bounced back nicely with an 87-47 win over Morgan Saturday at Sutton Gym.
The Tigers got off to a good start, leading 19-6 after one. Morgan kept pace with Marietta in the second as it was 36-23 at halftime, but the orange and black put it out of reach by outscoring the Raiders 26-12 in the third.
Owen Riley led all scorers with 26 points for Marietta. Zaiden Wittekind fouled out early in the fourth, but not before putting up 20 points. Logan Grosklos netted 14 while Graesyn Moat returned from injury and contributed six off the bench.
The Tigers, who improved to 16-3, have a newly scheduled home game against Harvest Prep slated for Wednesday.
Morgan (4-14) was led by Gavin Shriver’s 13 points. Jude Garber added 11, Carsen Huck netted seven and Clayton Blackburn pitched in six. The Raiders play host to Tri-Valley on Tuesday.
