MC softball closes Florida trip with two wins

VIERA, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team ended its spring trip with a pair of five-inning mercy rule victories Saturday afternoon at the Space Coast Spring Games.

The Pioneers defeated Grinnell College, 10-2, and St. Norbert College, 12-4.

Marietta heads north with an 8-4 overall record and on a seven-game winning streak. Grinnell falls to 2-7 on the season and St. Norbert is 1-4 overall.

Grinnell scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and held that lead until the third when the Pioneers tied the game. Kayla O’Malley hit a two-run double for Grinnell. Adisson Heath lined a two-run double to left center in the top of the third to even the score, 2-2.

Marietta erupted for seven runs in the fourth. Liz White drove in two with a single down the left field line. Becca Street worked a bases loaded walk, two runs scored on wild pitches, and Katie Sweeney had an RBI single.

The Pioneers made it 10-2 in the fifth. Mallory Gorgacz singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Grace Elliott singled moving Gorgacz to third where she later scored on another wild pitch.

Kylie Cobb (1-0) got the win in relief. Cobb pitched 3.0 shutout innings and allowed just one hit. She walked one and struck out one. Aiyana Hancock started and went 2.0 inning giving up two runs on three hits and striking out three.

Meghan Harcus (1-1) started for Grinnell and got the loss. She gave up nine runs on six hits with six walks and two strikeouts. Elise Strohm threw the final 1.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits.

Sweeney went 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead Marietta.

Marietta continued its offensive barrage scoring eight runs in the first inning against St. Norbert. Heath got things started with an RBI double. Sweeney plated two runs with a single to center. Gorgacz and an RBI single and White drove in two runs with a single up the middle.

White picked up two more RBI in the third with a double. Streets plated a third run in the frame with a sac fly. The Pioneers’ final run came on a single from Gorgacz in the fourth.

St. Norbert got on the board with an RBI double from Magdeline Hanmann in the second and a two-run home run from Allison Ardito in the third. The Green Knights added an unearned run in the fourth.

Candace Walters (4-3) started in the circle for Marietta and picked up the win. She worked 3.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Hancock pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits with one strikeout.

Gorgacz was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. White had two hits, including a double and drove in four runs.

Marietta hosts Otterbein Saturday in its home and Ohio Athletic Conference opener. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
