Etta Express takes 1 of 2 from Student Princes
Marietta College and Heidelberg split an Ohio Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader Friday at Pioneer Park. Marietta won the first game, 10-2, and the Student Princes took game two, 19-3. Marietta moves to 6-13 overall and 4-02 in the OAC. Heidelberg is 13-10 overall and 4-2 in the OAC.
Austin Ziance (4-3) went the distance on the mound for Marietta in the first game. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. Ziance walked one and struck out eight.
Logan Walpole (3-2) started and took the loss. He worked 4.2 innings and allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Shane Jones and Logan Franz threw in relief.
Marietta plated two runs in the first inning on an RBI single from Zack Molloy and an error that allowed Trevor Hall to score. Bryce Bogan and Jameson Embrescia each drove in runs with singles in the fourth. A third Pioneer run scored on a wild pitch giving Marietta a 5-2 lead.
Diego DeCello had an RBI single to right in the fifth inning. Marietta added three more in the seventh. Cooper Fiehrer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Embrescia drove in two more with a single. Marietta’s final run came on a solo home run from Michael Ciavolella in the eighth.
Ciavolella, Molloy, DeCello, Bogan, and Embrescia each had two hits in the game for Marietta.
In the second game, Heidelberg exploded for 10 runs in the fourth inning. The Student Princes added three runs in the fifth and seventh, one in the eighth, and two more in the ninth as they collected 22 hits in the game.
Marietta’s runs came on a sac fly from DeCello in the first. Embrescia smacked a solo home run in the second and Evan King drove in a run in the ninth with a single to center.
Luke Czarnomski (1-2) started and got the loss. He gave up four runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. He walked one and struck out five. Five other Pioneers threw in relief.
Aidan Cummings (3-0) started and got the win. He threw 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Chris Mathis, Daniel Bowser, and Tyler Verdin each pitched one inning of relief.
Embrescia was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the second game.
Marietta hosts Muskingum for an OAC doubleheader on Wednesday. The first game starts at 4 p.m.
