PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nathaniel Lowe doubled twice and drove in three runs, including a pivotal two-bagger in the seventh inning, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 on Wednesday.

The Reds won two of three at Philadelphia, handing the Phillies their first series loss since Don Mattingly took over as interim manager. His record since replacing Rob Thomson fell to 16-6.

The Phillies had narrowed a four-run deficit to 5-4 when Lowe drove a 2-1 fastball from reliever Orion Kerkering off the wall in center field for a two-run double in the seventh.

Spencer Steer had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Sal Stewart hit his 12th homer for the Reds. Andrew Abbott (4-2) allowed two runs, one earned, in 5 1/3 innings.

Alec Bohm and Edmundo Sosa homered for the Phillies, who were without major league home run leader Kyle Schwarber for a third straight game. Schwarber has been dealing with a stomach ailment. Aaron Nola (2-4) gave up four runs on eight hits in five innings.

Cincinnati catcher P.J. Higgins had a strong day at the plate, even if he was uneven behind it. Higgins had two hits and drove in two runs, but made two errors — one for throwing a ball into center while trying to throw out a baserunner, and the second for catcher interference, allowing the Phillies’ Edmundo Sosa to reach first base. The Phillies were also 4 for 4 stealing bags against Higgins.

Up next: RHP Chris Paddack (0-5, 7.07 ERA) is slated to start for Cincinnati on Friday in the opener of a series against visiting St. Louis. RHP Kyle Leahy (5-3. 3.94) will start for the Cardinals.

TWINS 4, ASTROS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Ryan matched his career high with 12 strikeouts over seven innings, Ryan Kreidler hit a three-run home run and the Minnesota Twins beat the Houston Astros 4-1 on Wednesday.

Ryan (3-3) retired his last 16 batters after an RBI single by his former catcher Christian Vázquez in the second, the only hard-hit ball the Astros managed against the All-Star right-hander. The other three hits Ryan allowed were a leadoff blooper by Jeremy Peña and two infield singles. He didn’t walk anybody while throwing 71 of 99 pitches for strikes.

Rookie Andrew Morris pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first career save for the Twins, who have won three of their last four series.

Victor Caratini hit a solo homer in the second for the Twins, the other catcher who teed off on his former team. Caratini, who signed a two-year, $14 million contract after playing the last two seasons with the Astros, has become the everyday backstop now that regular Ryan Jeffers is out for the next six to eight weeks with a broken wrist.

The Astros signed the 35-year-old Vázquez to a minor league contract before he made the team out of spring training, essentially filling the spot vacated by Caratini.

Mike Burrows went six innings for the Astros, giving up six hits, four runs and three walks while striking out two batters. He made his team-leading 10th start for injury-ravaged Houston.

The Astros matched their season high with 15 strikeouts, including three each by Peña, Jake Meyers and Brice Matthews.

RAYS 5, ORIOLES 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Richie Palacios hit a go-ahead single, Hunter Feduccia homered and the Tampa Bay Rays used a four-run eighth inning to complete a sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 5-3 win on Wednesday.

Jonathan Aranda tied the game 3-3 in the eighth inning with a two-run double to centerfield that scored two runners. Palacios followed up with his single to take the lead before stealing second, which allowed Ryan Vilade to steal home and cap the scoring.

Feduccia had the game’s first run on a 421-foot shot to centerfield in the second inning. It was his first career homer in 182 plate appearances.

Jesse Scholtens (5-2) pitched four innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out four for the win.

The Orioles tied the game in the third on a Pete Alonso RBI single. Alonso then added his ninth home run of the year in the sixth, and Samuel Basallo followed with a homer of his own to put Baltimore ahead 3-1.

Anthony Nunez (2-1) took his first loss of the year after blowing his second save. He pitched 2/3 innings and surrendered four runs on three hits.

Ian Seymour got his second save of the season.

Tampa Bay moved to 9-0 against AL East opponents at home this season. Baltimore has played seven road games against AL East foes this season and is 0-7.

Starting at $2.99/week.
