Liston stars as Warren thumps Chillicothe

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Warren’s Emily Jackson, left, looks to pass as Chillcothe’s Julia Hall defends during a high school girls basketball game Monday in Vincent.

VINCENT — Kate Liston got hot at the right time.

The Warren senior captain scored 13 of her game-high 27 points in the third quarter to lead the Warriors to a 55-32 triumph over Chillicothe High in girls’ basketball action at the Warrior Coliseum Monday night.

“Give the credit to all of my teammates,” said the 5-foot-10 Liston, modestly. “I didn’t do anything.”

All she did was finish, time-and-time again.

“Thank God for Kate Liston,” said WHS head coach Amy Colgrove. “She got good position underneath and worked so hard on the boards.”

Liston also drained a couple of triples for good measure in the first half.

Warren improved its overall record to 16-3, and earned a bounce-back victory after falling to D4 top-ranked Waterford High, 45-34, last Wednesday night.

Caspen Ford added nine points, and Peyton Bowe and Emily Jackson netted seven and six, respectively, for the royal blue and white winners. Emme Bowe, who finished with four points, was singled out for praise by Colgrove.

“She did a great job on defense and crashing the boards,” the coach said. “I think that was a big key for us.”

Chillicothe fell to 7-14 overall. Shawnee Smith led the Cavaliers with eight points, while Shawnice Smith and Julia Hall chipped in with seven and six, respectively.

The Cavs finished with 23 turnovers.

“I thought our defense played pretty good,” Colgrove said.

Warren got off to a slow start and trailed Chillicothe, 7-6, at the end of one. Liston and Ford each had three points apiece for the Warriors.

“We had a rough beginning,” Liston said.

Colgrove agreed and added, “We weren’t hitting our outside shots.”

The Cavs’ first-quarter scoring came from McKenzie Greene, Meliah Johnson, and Hall.

Sparked by Liston’s six second-quarter points, Warren regained the advantage and had a double-digit lead, 21-11, with about three minutes left in the stanza. But Chillicothe closed out the first half with a 9-0 run. During the surge, Shawnee Smith scored six straight points, including a four-point play, and Shawnice Smith had a bucket and bonus freebie.

At the intermission, Warren led 21-20.

In the third quarter, Liston had the hot hand and benefitted from some nice passes from teammates’ Grace Way and Peyton Bowe. In the process, the Warriors went from a point lead to a 13-point advantage (41-28) at the end of the stanza.

Winning going away, Warren outpointed Chillicothe 14-4 in the final period.

Warren is scheduled to play at Morgan at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
