There were rain clouds and plenty of mud Sunday afternoon at the Washington County Fairgrounds but that didn’t stop attendees from enjoying the second day of the Washington County Fair Sunday.

Colbie Westbrook, 10, was at the fair Sunday afternoon and she competed in a costume class competition with her horse Lazy Luna. The contest involved children and their horses dressing up in costumes and then showing them off so they could be judged.

Westbrook and Luna won by wearing hula-related outfits, including a plastic pineapple on Luna’s saddle and a lei wrapped around her tail. Westbrook wore a bathing suit, leis and an inflatable tropical bird.

Westbrook said she felt “pretty good” about winning the competition.

She likes “everything” about horses, she said, including “their personalities.”

Luna is “sweet (and) friendly”, Westbrook said.

Tiffany Uselton, her brother Mark Stevens, her sister Sabrina Stevens and all their children were part of the crowd that watched Westbrook in the competition.

Uselton said she brought her kids because “it was something to do” and because of the horses.

“A lot of the kids like the horses and I like the horses,” she said. “I’ve always liked horses .. I enjoy petting them, I think they’re awesome.”

Uselton’s son Brayden Uselton, 14, likes “everything” at the fair, he said.

There were several activities that children and families could enjoy at the fair Sunday including a dog show sportcase, an entertainment act called Mr. Puppet and sensory play stations called Happy Messy Play.

Chelsea Eddy brought her two sons, Holden Eddy, 3, and Camdyn Eddy, 18 months, to the fair on Saturday. They were playing in an area with dried corn and mini figures such as cows.

Eddy said her husband’s family has always come to the fair and she and husband have been coming since they first started dating.

“So we come every year … The boys love seeing the animals and they play,” she said.

The midway opened noon on Sunday. and this offered fairgoers rides and games to enjoy.

Jane Thomson-Timco and Tyler Timco brought their daughter, Murphy Timko, 2, to the fair with Sunday. She had a big smile on her face as she rode a ride as her parents watched.

Thomson-Timco said she brought her daughter to the fair for the rides, the animals and to get her exposed to things.

“She’s an animal lover,” Thomason-Timco said of her daughter. “She really likes the pigs.”

Jess Harmon brought his children, Ian Harmon, 9, and Kendyl Harmon, 6, to the fair Sunday too. They were playing a game where participants try to throw small balls at dishes that are floating in a small pool. The prize was a live rabbit.

Kendly Harmon said her favorite part of the fair is “the games” and brother Ian Harmon agreed, saying he likes the games too.

He said he likes “the darts because I always win.”

The animals at the fair don’t just perform or participate in exhibits or demonstrations, they also have their hygiene taken care of.

Addi McNabb, 12, spent time Sunday afternoon at one of the fair’s animal barns bathing her sheep, Bob.

She said her family raises sheep from babies and she likes sheep.
