PARKERSBURG – The weekend’s wet weather looks set to continue into Monday, potentially putting a damper on Memorial Day activities.
American Legion Post 64 in Marietta announced Friday afternoon the parade planned for Monday morning had been cancelled, though they still plan to have a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the post, 800 Wooster St., followed by lunch.
The Disabled American Veterans’ Memorial Day picnic planned for Monday at the DAV Hall in Whipple was cancelled Friday afternoon, due to the forecast inclement weather and resulting on-site conditions, organizers said.
Other scheduled events include:
* Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, Memory Gardens & Mausoleums will hold a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday at 1934 Dupont Road, Parkersburg. There will be flag placements and a food drive, with proceeds going to the Disabled American Veterans. It will conclude by noon.
* Regardless of weather conditions, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5108 is still having its small parade at 8:30 a.m. Monday morning from the former Harmar Elementary School to Harmar Cemetery, followed by a ceremony to honor the fallen.
* On Monday, the Beverly-Waterford parade departs at 9 a.m. from Fort Frye High School, proceeding to Beverly Cemetery and Waterford Cemetery, with remarks and veterans’ honors at each stop. The parade is organized by American Legion Post 389, which says on its group Facebook page that veterans groups are invited to participate along with anyone else. People are asked to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the post, 114 Fifth St., or 8:45 a.m. at the high school.
* Williamstown American Legion Post 159 will hold Memorial Day activities Monday, beginning with parade lineup at 9 a.m. at Tomlinson Park.
The parade is scheduled to depart the park at 9:30 a.m. and proceed to Riverview Cemetery, where a speech and wreath presentation will be held. The parade may be canceled in the event of rain, with a decision expected about an hour or two beforehand, according to information provided by the post.
After the cemetery program, activities will continue at the Williamstown American Legion with a ceremony and flag disposal. A picnic lunch will follow at the Legion.
* American Legion Post 15 will hold a Memorial Day observance at the post, 2505 Ohio Ave., Parkersburg, before a ceremony slated for 10 a.m. at City Park.
* American Legion Post 750 in Lowell will hold a Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. Monday, according to Cassie Bartlett, an auxiliary member with the post.
Bartlett said the parade will begin at the firehouse across from the Legion and proceed to the cemetery, where a brief ceremony will be held.
“They’ll have all the ball teams, and all the veterans will walk in the parade, and it’s very nice,” Bartlett said.
The post will also host a breakfast for veterans at 9 a.m. before the parade. Afterward, Bartlett said, community members are invited back for hot dogs, hamburgers and chips.
* The annual Memorial Day program will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Leavitt Funeral Home in Belpre. The Belpre Area Veterans will participate in the program, sharing information and casualty statistics for conflicts throughout the nation’s 250-year history and recognizing the members they have lost. After that, they will have a short ceremony at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
