Conversation with a Ground Hog

When I was running on River Road (Devola) on February 2, I saw a ground hog. I approached him cautiously and in a friendly manner asked him what his name is. “Buckeye Chuck,” he replied. I queried again, “Are you related to Punxsutawney Phil?” “Just a distant relative,” he said coolly (for there was a chill in the morning air). I pressed my luck in my inquisition of this former hibernator and asked, “Well, have you seen your shadow today?” “No,” he answered with some impatience in his voice but then quickly added haughtily, “Don’t believe this kind of myth. ...

Concern about Fort Frye school district decision-making

I have been following a concerning situation in the Fort Frye School District in which four exceptional and experienced teachers are being non-renewed to hire new and inexperienced teachers, apparently not due to performance issues but for other considerations that have not been communicated to the public. I have been hesitant to get involved in a large and growing community advocacy group that is aiming to change the direction of this decision, mainly because I am not a taxpayer in the district, nor do I have kids in it. However, as an alumnus, I wanted to share my support for the ...

Hoping for Climate Corner

I was looking forward to reading this week’s article from the Climate Corner series in the weekend edition of the Marietta Times. I noticed that it did not appear in the January 25 edition of the Times. I hope that you continue to feature them in the coming weeks. Sincerely, Jim Grecni Marietta, OH

No Climate Corner?

I genuinely appreciated finding the MOV Climate Corner in my Marietta Times for the past several months. I looked for it on Saturday, January 25, and was disappointed that it wasn’t published in that issue. Sure, I can read it in the Parkersburg News and Sentinel, but I don’t subscribe to that newspaper. I do, however, subscribe to my hometown newspaper, The Marietta Times, and I would sure like to count on being able to read it regularly. It is an important, locally written column, and worthy of my paid subscription. Thank you! Dawn E. Hewitt Marietta, OH

Homelessness is an everyone problem

When I was 11 years old, my family’s home burned to the ground in the dead of winter. We lost everything — our belongings, our shelter, and our sense of security — all just weeks before Christmas. For what felt like an eternity to a young kid, we were essentially homeless, relying on the kindness of others to get by. It was devastating and something I live with to this day. But something else that has stayed with me wasn’t just the loss; it was the overwhelming generosity of our community. I was in awe of how many people opened up their homes to offer us a couch to sleep on, ...

Drones

Drones are today a very common term. The term attributed to an unknown aircraft. Perhaps it originated with a kite of yesteryear. Todays’ Drones seem to elicit discomfort to the point of fear. Yes, drones are both innocuous as well helpful and the same time can elicit fear. We may conjecture that perhaps drones precursor was “A Peeping Tom” (which originated with Lady Godiva). All of us watched when China sent a drone that traveled throughout USA for a whole day. Today there is not just a sole severance Drone in the sky. What we see, and just dismiss as just a drone, or should ...
