California livestock decisions affecting Ohio

Anyone who has taken even the most rudimentary of civics classes knows one state cannot impose a law upon the citizens of another state; and that federal law outweighs state law in cases where the two are in conflict. California isn’t worried about such things, it seems. And, though their hearts may be in the right place, state officials now have a fight on their hands, as they’ve violated the U.S. Constitution’s Commerce Clause. Ohio’s Buckeye Institute has filed an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case filed by the National Pork Producers Council, against ...

Lies about Medicare need to stop spreading

Dear Editor, It seems that someone has way too much money to be able to send flyers to the households of residents in West Virginia with absolute lies concerning Medicare. Imagine the cost of running all the TV ads! I am not sure who the brain child and supporters are but I do know that “60 Plus American Association of Senior Citizens” does not represent me, my husband and most of the people I know who are over 60. I would think that Senator Manchin would not like the ads, either. If Senator Manchin wants to protect West Virginia seniors, he will vote with President Joe ...

It’s not the guns

For the past several years I’ve tried to ignore all of the insane blather by left wing socialists but the letter in the Wednesday, June 8, Marietta Times can’t go unanswered. The writer tries to blame the lawlessness in our country on an inanimate object, guns, by saying “it’s the guns, stupid.” I’d like to just say “it’s not the guns, stupid!” It’s the socialists who hamstring law enforcement by advocating defunding the police. It’s liberal prosecutors who won’t use all of the laws that are already on the books. Only a miniscule percentage of gun laws already ...

The Elephant in the Room

Children die in Texas. The country cries out with pain. Congress forms a group of senators to “study” the problem and NOTHING HAPPENS. Why? A report of the newly formed bipartisan group of Senators, led by Texas Senator John Cornyn and Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy sounds like more of the same. While “red flag” laws would be welcomed by families and mental health professionals alike, they alone will not keep guns from those who want them. The unintended consequence of these laws if not written properly might be to deny persons with mild mental illness the “constitutional ...

Apology

On June 2 the Board of Commissioners, other elected officials, and roughly 200 citizens, attended an Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) public meeting on an application to permit a new injection well in Washington County. The following week (June 9), the Commissioners issued a public statement naming DeepRock Disposal Solutions, LLC as the applicant for this permit. While the company had submitted an application earlier in the year, it had subsequently been withdrawn and the June 2 meeting was held in relation to an application from a separate company. For that error, and ...
