Waterford cruises past Clay in district semi

WELLSTON – After scoring just four points in Waterford’s regular-season finale win over Marietta, Kendall Sury reminded everyone what she’s capable of Monday.

The Waterford senior standout tallied a game-high 16 points — in just two-and-a-half quarters of playing time — to help lead the Wildcats to a 44-22 win over Portsmouth Clay in a Division VII district semifinal.

Waterford (22-1) will take on either Trimble or Portsmouth Notre Dame at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Wellston High School with a district championship on the line.

Avery Smithberger scored Waterford’s first four points before a 3-pointer by Sury put the Wildcats up 7-2 early.

Sophia Craft answered with a bucket to get Clay within three at 7-4, but Waterford scored the final eight points of the period — including baskets by Brynnlee Pottmeyer and Cira Ponchak — to take a 15-4 advantage into the second.

Smithberger, who finished with eight points, opened the second with a bucket before Sury put in eight straight points — including back-to-back 3-pointers — to extend the lead to 21, 25-4.

The Panthers, who finished the season with an 11-12 record, got another two points from Craft, but Ava Hurley answered with a 3-pointer to make it 28-6. A pair of free throws by Avery Wagner, who netted nine points, and a bucket at the buzzer by Sury stretched the cushion to 32-7 at halftime.

After the Wildcats opened the second half with five straight points from Wagner and a three-point play by Sury, head coach Jerry Close emptied his bench with the team up 40-7.

Clay scored the final eight points of the third quarter to make it 40-15 with eight minutes to play.

The Panthers outscored Waterford 7-4 in the fourth but never threatened. Hensley Wagner had a pair of baskets in the fourth to account for the Wildcats’ scoring.

Clay was led by Craft and Ava Demorest, who scored seven points apiece.
