MHS crew succeeds at Dillon Sprints
Girls team medals in four events
NASHPORT — The Marietta Tiger Navy and other rowers had “company” on the water at the Dillon Lake Scholastic Sprints at Dillon State Park this past Saturday.
“An unwelcome event left thousands of dead fish floating on the water during the regatta,” said MHS girls’ coach Joe Tewkesbury.
On top of that, Tewkesbury said that there were “strong headwinds, choppy water, and chilly temperatures.”
“Nearly 250 crews competed for medals,” the coach added. “The racing began early and proceeded through head racing qualifying, heats, and finals.”
The Marietta Tiger Navy entered 14 events, and the girls claimed medals in four of them.
The lightweight eight captured a gold “in a row over,” Tewkesbury said. That shell included Marisa Smith, Emma Booth, Brooke Taylor, Grace Crosby, Sydney Westbrook, Ahni Georgerian, Reagan Loeber, Tait Ricks, and coxswain Madeline Hawkins.
The lightweight four of Smith, Booth, Taylor, Crosby, and Hawkins got a silver, while the freshman eight of Westbrook, Georgerian, Lauryn Simpson, Audrey Hearing, Abigail Westbrook, Ava Lesher, Loeber, Ricks, and cox Averi Houck earned a bronze.
The double of Laura Rauch and Katie Kitchen also got a bronze.
Tewkesbury said that the girls also qualified the novice eight, which finished fourth in the final. That boat featured Simpson, Hearing, Kya Lindsey, Kaitlyn Clovis, Carli Robertson, Halie Blauser, Luna Besaiso, Anabel Avenarius, and cox Seneca Craven.
“All of the crews were hampered by the wind and rough water, in particular those who were lighter than their opponents,” Tewkesbury said.
The Kindra Hecker-coached Marietta boys also rowed well but did not medal in any event.
The boys’ boats qualified the novice four, varsity four and the double, which turned in the fastest time of 16 crews in the heats.
In the finals, the novice four of Devin Porter, William Thompson, Joshua Collins, Tristen Sealey, and cox Hunter Danford was fourth; the varsity four of Hayden Carman, Abdeljaleel Ismail, Carrington Vandyk, Alexander Perruci, and cox Patrick Elliott, seventh, and the double of Jacob Mahaffey and Jonathan Mahaffey, sixth.
The Marietta Tiger Navy is scheduled to be back on the road and water again this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, when it competes in the Dogwood Junior Regional Championship at Oak Ridge, Tenn.
