Blood shortage declared an emergency

An emergency blood shortage was reported Monday by the American Red Cross because of an “alarming drop” in supplies, the agency said. The blood supply dropped about 25% in June, the Red Cross said. “The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage and needs donors to give now and take steps to protect patient care,” Sharon Kesselring, executive director of the American Red Cross of the Ohio River Valley, said. “A steep decline in blood donations since the end of May has created a growing gap between supply and patient need.
