Through the eyes of a child

When our daughter Valerie was shy of 7 years, she returned from school very sad and soon started crying. I asked what the matter was. Through tears and sobs, she asked me if President of the United States was avery important person. During election time, her teacher had been talking to her class about elections. On behalf of all the board members and volunteers of the BJFM (Blues, Jazz and Folk Music) Society here in Marietta, we want to thank all those involved with making our BITS (Blues In The Schools) program successful again. We were blessed to have Rev. Robert Jones, Sr. from Detroit, Mich., present to over 2,000 students in the Marietta-Parkersburg area. We started again after COVID, visiting five schools and the Washington County Juvenile Detention Center. We also had a Cobbler’s Coffeehouse performance by Rev. Milestones like anniversaries are time for celebration. Many families just like ours, have long standing traditions of celebrating special events. These are the times for families to reestablish and rekindle kinships. It even makes it more exciting if the occasion is a surprise. MC earns recognition

On Sept. 7, The Wall Street Journal published it’s annual ranking of the top 500 colleges and universities in the United States. According to the United Nations, America has 6,000 institutions of higher learning. The official count of the U.S. Dept. of Education of the number of colleges and universities is 5,916. Sadly this number is decreasing each year. This year Marietta College ranked 304th. Any way you do the math, this puts Marietta College within the top 6% of U.S. colleges and universities. Beware of biases; oil and gas industry has not fizzled

I am writing in response to the Marietta Times “Our Opinion” column printed on Monday, August 28th and titled “The gas boom fizzled. Look now to the future”. Rarely does one read such a blatantly biased and misleading editorial, and I felt a reply was warranted. Dr. Chase, former head of the Petroleum Engineering department at Marietta College, has previously written a nice letter in response, but I would like to add just a few more numbers to fully highlight to the public how disingenuous this column was.
