Oil and gas boom has not fizzled; new industries will continue to be attracted to Shale Crescent region

I am responding to the Marietta Times “Our Opinion” column published on Monday, Aug. 28 regarding the Ohio River Valley Institute’s (ORVI) totally inaccurate conclusion that the oil and gas boom has fizzled. The readers’ first tip that the report by ORVI may be biased against the oil and gas industry lies in their reference to the Shale Crescent region of Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as “Frackalachia.” ORVI failed to use the most accurate data on oil and gas production that can be readily obtained from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website ...

A look at the way politics used to be

Do you remember when… Do you remember when “we” used to elect a new president? We accepted our new president whether we had voted for him or not. Life went on; it was no big deal. He was the president of all the people. Do you remember when we had a peaceful transfer of power from one president to the next? All the past presidents showed up for the inauguration to pay their respects to the new president. And they kept quiet as the new president charted his course in governing the nation. Save the planet for the kids

When their house blows away, or floats away, or is burned to the ground, maybe, maybe, the climate deniers will realize we are in a climate crisis and they need to listen to the youth of the world. A group called Prager U which describes itself as “the world’s leading conservative nonprofit” is providing millions of students in Florida with materials that falsely claim wind and solar power pollute the planet and compare climate activists to Nazis. Texas has joined Florida in choosing these materials. Why would people in Texas deny climate crisis when they have experienced some ...

Support the Marietta Tigers

This week my husband, Mark and I photographed the band members and fall athletes for Marietta High School. We worked with over 350 students and 50 coaches. Clearly the efforts of the staff is recognizable. The students were polite, respectful and enthusiastic. We were thanked personally those days and recognized on social media. I was even presented a bouquet of flowers by the volleyball team. The administration and athletic department have been working hard to improve the culture at the high school. These students are encouraged to volunteer in our community in projects such as trash ...

Caution for churches and religious organizations advocating for legislation

A church is a place of worship including Christian churches, temples, mosques, synagogues, and other worship places. Churches also include conventions and associations of churches—for example, the United Methodist Church or the Southern Baptist Convention. Churches exist to allow congregations to come together for spiritual renewal. For purposes of U.S. tax law, churches are considered to be public charities, also known as Section 501(c)(3) organizations and are exempt from federal and state taxes. This privilege assumes that the Church in question is adhering to the purposes ...
