Reflecting on McCullough visit to Marietta

I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of the well-loved historian David McCullough. I was blessed to introduce Mr. McCullough at People’s Bank Theater in June, 2019, when he came to Marietta to speak about his final book, “The Pioneers.” We met only briefly before he took the stage, to captivate a packed audience with stories from the settlement of the Northwest Territory. I read with interest John Ells’ letter to the editor regarding the Aug. 2, Primary Election that will determine who represents the 30th Senate District in the Ohio Republican State Central Committee (ORSCC) race. The letter was wrong. ORSCC’s primary function is to identify, promote and support viable Republican candidates at the state and federal level. Purity tests are of no use in winning elections. In the year of 1900 bulldozers were first being used. Since that time a billion ponds have been built and every farm has at least one pond holding back water from getting to the ocean. Also there has been billions of septic tanks. Every house has one and each holding 1000 gallons of water. Ideas over anger The letter dated July 15 contains a critical error. The CDC report on gun deaths in 2020 is actually 45,222, of which 19,384 were murders. Suicides with a gun were 24,292. Now 19,000 deaths doesn’t feel like that big of a number. Unless you’re the parent, grandparent, child or spouse of the victim. Then you have a 100% participation rate and a traumatic life change.
