Climate Change and the H-Word

I have a confession to make: I just finished eating a double bacon cheeseburger. I drive a car. I’m writing this on an iPhone. I’ll later edit and submit it to the Times with one of multiple laptops I use. I love air conditioning and hot showers. I’m a night owl who keeps the lights on until the wee hours of the morning. If I had the chance, I would love to hop on an airplane and travel to just about anywhere in the world. I’m also a climate change activist. Contrary to popular belief, most of us advocating for a habitable planet are not solitary hermits living in zen ...

Eternal truths

As an American History teacher, I have spoken about the Gettysburg Address a number of times. I am awed by the fact that Abraham Lincoln was able to give one of the most powerful speeches in history in just 270 words. Edward Everett, the former Secretary of State and the most gifted orator of his day, spoke for over two hours just before President Lincoln took the stage. So impressed was Everett with Lincoln’s performance he said, “I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes.” What ...

Thank you

I would like to thank the lady and children who took the time to pick up the trash on 677 - half way up hill. It really looks nice. They even found a paint can. Again thank you! Carolyn Skinner Marietta

A solitary figure

It is with great interest and admiration that the nation watched Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) stand before the nation and declare that “I will do everything that I can to make sure the former President (Trump) never goes anywhere near the Oval Office again.” Wow! Kevin McCarthy and Mitch McConnell should have such courage! Any Republican worth his or her salt ought to pay attention and begin to do some “soul-searching” as time moves relentlessly toward 2022 and the mid-term elections. This woman stands for SOMETHING. If nothing else is evident in the aftermath of the Trump ...

News is the problem

It is time for the citizens of this country to demand responsible journalism. “News” is now all about misconceptions and outright lies to sell a product. The examples are everywhere, and many in the populace don’t seem to see it. Journalism is about reporting facts, not opinion. We need only look to the recent reports about a young girl that was shot and killed by police in Columbus. 10TV has a post live on Facebook that says “My daughter dispatched Columbus police for protection, not to be a homicide today.” Facts in the case in no way support what this mother said. She ...

Tyrant

Merriam-Webster defines the word “tyrant” as “an absolute ruler unrestrained by law or constitution,” a “usurper of sovereignty,” “a ruler who exercises absolute power oppressively or brutally,” and finally, “one resembling an oppressive ruler in the harsh use of authority or power.” All of the those could be used to describe Mike Dewine. He ran in 2018, touting his conservative principles, but his policies have turned out to be anything but conservative. Indeed, he has been the most oppressive governor that Ohio has ever had, at least in recent memory. It’s been ...
