Vienna town hall to seek public input on city’s recycling
VIENNA — Vienna residents will have a chance to weigh in on the future of the city’s recycling program as the city prepares for its recycling contract to be put out for competitive bid.
Mayor Chad Emrick has scheduled a town hall meeting for 6 p.m. June 15 at the Jackson Park Community Building on 34th Street. The meeting will give residents an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and offer suggestions about what recycling services should look like in Vienna.
“The options would be about how we would offer, or what we would offer in the way of recycling services to the city, keeping in line with current state code,” Emrick said.
Those options could include continuing a city-wide program, considering a subscription-based service that would allow residents to opt in, or offering recycling drop-off points for residents who have extra materials to recycle, Emrick said.
The city’s current recycling program is a city-wide curbside service. Emrick said every residential property in Vienna is charged a flat fee on its utility bill, whether the resident uses the service or not. He said the fee is about $3 and some change, though he did not immediately have the exact amount.
Curbside recycling is offered every other week to Vienna residents as of a recent change, but Emrick said the program has been limited by what the recycler is able to accept.
“Currently we only have about 30% of city residents that actually utilize the recycling program that we have,” Emrick said.
In a Facebook post announcing the town hall, Emrick said the city’s current recycling contract is nearing the point where it will be put out for competitive bid and that he believes it is important to hear directly from residents before any decisions are made.
“Your input is valuable and will help shape the future of recycling in Vienna,” Emrick wrote. “I encourage all interested residents to attend and be part of the conversation.”
