Avoiding socialism

Dear reader, our area of southeastern Ohio votes strongly republican. The Republican Party has made clear their opposition to “socialism”, including their opposition to “Obama Care”(properly known as the Affordable Care Act); their desire to privatize Social Security, Medicare; their opposition to labor unions; and, more recently, a larger stimulus payment. If you support the Republican Party and their anti-socialist agenda toward these and other social programs, then you can demonstrate your support by taking the following steps: ¯Return your stimulus checks/deposits to the ...

Thank you Williamstown Community

There are so many people we would like to thank for the 3900 lbs of food and necessities that were collected from the Williamstown Christmas Parade. You were so generous with your contributions to the food pantry. Your donations were overwhelming. Thank you to the schools, churches, businesses, organizations and individuals who made it possible to feed those in our community that need help. There is no way we can do this without you. We would also like to thank the little girl who donated her tooth fair money to the food pantry. Also thank you to everyone that made donations in memory ...

Open letter to City of Marietta

I would like to bring attention to and congratulate our Marietta City Council on the passing of Ordinance 165, which increases the marketing capacity of the Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) and allows support for Marietta Main Street and the Southeastern Ohio Port Authority. We are humbled and fortunate to be a part of such an amazing community of neighbors and dedicated elected officials. Since 1962 the CVB has worked tirelessly to market Marietta and Washington County as a premier getaway destination, and our efforts have proven to be successful. Though much work is yet to be ...

Shoutout to MHS for vaccine drive-thru

My wife and I got our first doses of the Moderna vaccine at the Memorial Health System drive thru clinic on the Wayne Street campus. Our appointments were scheduled online, and the procedure worked perfectly. On separate Saturdays (Jan. 23 and 30), we were greeted by helpful staff members bundled up for the chilly weather. We couldn’t see all the warm smiles behind the masks, but it was easy to sense their friendliness and eagerness to help. Everything was well-organized, and the entire process was smooth over about 25 minutes. The Memorial Health System is a great community asset, and ...

Everybody lives downstream

About 50 miles up the Ohio River from Marietta lies the small town of Clarington. Clarington has a neighbor moving in, with ill intentions. Mountaineer NGL Storage LLC with the help of its sister company, Powhatan Salt Company LLC, plan to create an underground natural gas liquids (NGL) storage facility. Powhatan Salt Company LLC is applying to the Ohio Division of Natural Resources for permits to take millions of gallons of water from the Ohio River, pump it underground to a salt cavern next to/beneath the river. The water would then dissolve a cavity in the salt cavern and the water ...

Tribute to Arbors of Marietta

At the beginning of this virus pandemic, I could not imagine that my mother of 97 years old would survive. Isolation and living in a nursing home would be very hard to keep up her good health. Not having in person visits with our mother from March until September was maybe harder for me that her, due to the staff of Arbors. The nursing staff kept close eye on all medical needs, and the personal care aides were there to keep her company, help answer her phone, even receive and send text messages with photos. The housekeeping department did above the current needs to keep the rooms and all ...
